When I popped Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure into my computer, my first instinct was to grab the box and see if the game was made by Pixar. My eyes weren’t deceiving me when I thought it was too close a look alike to Toy Story. Then in the first couple minutes of the game, there is a Matrix inspired bullet flying scene. By then, I was just plain confused. But once I got past all the movie misuses, I found a quite lighthearted, fun game that I actually enjoyed playing.
Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure is an adventure game with a light-hearted side. You play as Fenimore Fillmore, a somewhat clumsy cowboy with a strong dislike for artichokes. He’s off to save the town from the mean John Starek, a greedy rancher who is out to steal everyone’s land. Along the way, you interact with a ton of characters including an overly busty school teacher named Rhiannon. Your mission: save the town from Starek and ride off into the sunset. Sounds pretty simple, right?
Well, sort of. Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure is a challenging game but is definitely doable. Some of the challenges are extremely tedious like endlessly watering crops so you have carrots to feed your horse. As with most adventure games though, you have to deeply scour your surroundings to find any items you could add to your inventory. There is also a bunch of puzzles and in-game mini games to keep you busy.
As for graphics, Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure uses a new generation proprietary engine which allows for natural shapes, movements, and facial expressions. This allows the game to have amazing graphics which have a too close for comfort resemblance to Toy Story. But as said before, once you realize that this is Fenimore Fillmore and not Woody, you get past this roadblock for the game. The graphics are extremely cutesy and the characters are like cartoons that have come to life. The voice acting actually even matches the facial movement of the characters. These graphics though do come with a price. There is an extremely long load time for any large cutscenes. The movies are definitely impressive but don’t necessarily correlate with the amount of wait time that is associated with them.
Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure is a great light-hearted, entertaining game. I easily killed a couple hours at my computer playing it without realizing how much time had went by. The game isn’t rocket science, but will provide a moderate challenge for those who like adventure games. The story is also quite comical and will keep you amused.
If I personally could get over the fact that it’s not Woody from Toy Story, then I would have liked the game even more. But with this huge stigma attached to Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure from the moment you start playing, it’s hard to not get that image out of your mind. Overall, it’s still a fun game and a great way to pass the time with.
